Miss no Prints with Gmail & Google Cloud Print

Tuesday, January 25, 2011

Yes, I did have some reservations about cloud printing via web-connected HP printers. But I admitted then that sending print jobs via e-mail is great. Here comes Google cloud print app and gmail that will enable anyone to print to their printers from anywhere and (almost) anytime.

The apps not only allow you to send print jobs from your gmail but also puts your print job in queue in the "cloud" in case the printer is off (or Google Cloud print connector is off). This means documents to be printed can be put in queue while in transit. When the printer is on or (online), it will then download the print job and start printing immediately. This really make sense. But if your company is always on, then you can print important document every time.

As of now, only on computers in Windows and those who can access gmail via iOS or Android can run the feature. Supported document types include *.pdf and .doc files. The gmail blog said that this will be rolled out in the US in the next few days.

I just checked now, and I need to download the latest Google chrome beta version in order to connect my printer to the Google Cloud print. And of course, this feature is in its relative infancy but I'm sure you can imagine too the possibilities.

You can know more about Google Cloud Print here.

Everyday, solutions are coming up for us to be able to print when we need to. And if the only thing that concern you is the price of print consumables, then you should try out alternative toner replacements like compatible HP toners, Brother toners and Samsung toners.

Cloud Printing is Upon Us, Will you press P from the Cloud?

Tuesday, January 18, 2011

PCWorld ran this interesting article, Cloud Printing Is Here--Do You Need It? and here are my thoughts.
cloud printingPrinters were made as peripherals to produce hard copy of our documents. Getting it to scan, fax and make copies is alright. Designing it to access the internet, I feel, is cool but I don't get the point yet.

I would like to call it PCializing/smartphoning the printer not out of extra important necessity. For me, I go online to read, to play, to blog but it's just feel weird to do that in a printer, even if the printer is capable of it. We are in the era of PCs, laptops, netbooks, smartphones and, lately, tablets. They all pretty much take care of the things we need to do online.

Fine. There are things online that you may need to be printed and perhaps immediately. Businesses with print-on-demand need for their documents stands to benefit from cloud printing. But I think they are still few. An example would probably be a business offering printer service wherein customers walk-in and say print this Facebook photo or plane tickets or coupons.

The capability to send print jobs via e-mail to these web-connected printers are great, but I feel that the rest of the features, downloadable apps and all are just more like icings on big cake.

So, the answer to the question of this blog post title is, I'll press cancel. A reliable HP printer and compatible HP toners can work just fine with our PCs and our smartphones.
